Penta shared a memorable moment with Chad Gable after losing the WWE Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam, and it was completely unscripted.
Gable defeated Penta by submission on Night 2 of SummerSlam, held August 2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, to win the first singles title of his WWE career. Penta went for a second Mexican Destroyer but was caught in the Ankle Lock, which ended the match.
Gable was visibly emotional in the middle of the ring moments after the match. Penta walked over, picked up the Intercontinental Championship and wrapped it around Gable’s waist. He then raised Gable’s hand and hugged him before leaving the ring so Gable could celebrate with his family.
Gable revealed on the Complex Graps Wrestling Podcast that none of it had been planned ahead of time.
“And none of that was talked about. None of that was discussed. It was just like, no, this is yours now.”
Gable added that Penta’s gesture brought tears to his eyes, calling it “the ultimate sign of respect.”
The loss ended Penta’s lengthy Intercontinental Championship reign. Before SummerSlam, he had defended the title at WrestleMania 42 against Rusev, Rey Mysterio, JD McDonagh, Je’Von Evans and Dragon Lee.
Gable has since defended the Intercontinental Championship against challengers such as Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee, retaining the title both times.
