Chad Gable is a singles champion in WWE for the first time. On night two of SummerSlam at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Gable beat Penta for the Intercontinental Title in front of a hometown crowd.
The match was one of the strongest things on the card, and the crowd bit on a string of near falls down the stretch. Penta hit a Mexican Destroyer on the apron and later connected with the Penta Driver and the Sacrifice, but Gable kicked out each time. Gable had answers of his own, stringing together German suplexes and taking Penta out with a moonsault to the floor.
The finish came when Gable countered another Destroyer attempt into the Ankle Lock in the middle of the ring. Penta got a hand near the ropes before Gable dragged him back to the center, and the champion tapped.

Gable earned the shot on the 7/13 RAW, winning a Gauntlet Match and making Ethan Page submit to the same hold.
This is the first singles championship of Gable’s WWE run. His previous title reigns all came in the tag team division, with runs in NXT and on both SmackDown and Raw.
Penta’s reign ends at just over five months. He took the title from Dominik Mysterio on the 3/2 Raw and retained it in the Ladder Match at WrestleMania 42.
