Sami Zayn has reached the top of WWE. At Night of Champions this Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, he defeated Cody Rhodes and Gunther in the main event to capture the Undisputed WWE Championship for the first time in his career.
The match was highly competitive throughout. Gunther came close to winning, as did Cody, who even managed to hit a double Cross Rhodes at one point.
The finish, however, went Zayn’s way. As Rhodes looked for another Cross Rhodes, Sami slipped free, caught the champion off guard and got the pin, ending the American Nightmare’s reign.
After the match, an emotional Zayn was interviewed and spoke about what the win meant to him:
“Some good, and lately, some bad. A lot of folks said I would never win the WWE Championship. But I stand here tonight, in front of my people… It is hard to believe. Oh my God. I’m not usually at a loss for words but…”
The crowd began to chant ‘you deserve it,’ and Zayn responded, “You know what? You’re damn right I deserve it! 20-plus years in the game at the highest level, never got the recognition. 10-plus years chasing this championship, never got the recognition. I don’t care what happens to me tomorrow, next week, next month, next year. Forever, I will be Sami Zayn, WWE Champion.”
As we reported earlier, Oba Femi defeated Jey Uso on the same show, winning King of the Ring and earning a World Title match of his choosing at the biggest event of the summer.
Femi’s decision is expected to take place on the June 29 episode of Monday Night RAW.
