Sami Zayn is in one of the biggest moments of his WWE career after winning the Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions last Saturday at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Zayn defeated Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a Triple Threat Match, ending the American Nightmare’s reign and capturing his first world title in the company.
According to WrestleVotes, the backstage reaction in WWE was extremely positive. The internal feeling is that Zayn’s win was something people had wanted for a long time, especially because of how he is viewed within the company.
“This is something people have wanted for a very long time. Everybody loves Sami. That’s from in the ring to people who travel weekly, and it goes as far as the parking guys.”
Also according to WrestleVotes, Zayn is considered one of the most beloved figures in WWE, both among wrestlers and people who work backstage on a weekly basis.
After the match, Zayn also made it clear how much the win meant to him personally, directly responding to those who doubted he would ever reach the top of WWE.
“Some bad and good — and lately, some bad. A lot of folks said I would never win the WWE Championship! But I stand here tonight in front of my people — the WWE Champion! It is hard to believe. Oh my God. Byron… you know I’m not usually at a loss for words, but I…
You know what? You’re DAMN RIGHT I deserve it! Twenty-plus years in the game at the highest level — never got the recognition. Ten-plus years chasing this title — never got the recognition. I don’t care what happens to me tomorrow, next week, next month, next year. Forever, I will be Sami Zayn — W-W-E Champion!”.
Now, the question is what Zayn’s first major challenge as champion will be, as Oba Femi won King of the Ring and can choose between him and Roman Reigns for SummerSlam.
