Sami Zayn is sidelined with a legitimate broken hand. According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, the injury is real and not just a storyline device.
WWE has already been working the injury into television. On the August 7 SmackDown, Zayn revealed during a segment with CM Punk, Johnny Gargano, and Candice LeRae that he had a broken bone in his hand.
Despite the injury, Zayn appeared on the August 14 SmackDown, where Nick Aldis booked him in a match against Cody Rhodes. A win would have earned Zayn an Undisputed WWE Championship opportunity against the winner of CM Punk vs. Kevin Owens.
The match never got started. Randy Orton attacked Rhodes during Zayn’s entrance and a brawl broke out between the former Legacy partners, with SmackDown going off the air before the bell ever rang.

The injury comes after a major stretch for Zayn. He dropped the United States Championship to Trick Williams at WrestleMania 42, then captured his first Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions before losing it to CM Punk on July 6.
No timetable has been announced for Zayn’s return.
