Gunther is experiencing an unusual situation in WWE currently, given all the accomplishments he has achieved in recent years with the company, retiring John Cena, AJ Styles and Goldberg. That alone should already put him at a very high level. But that is not what has been seen recently.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, members of WWE’s creative team expressed frustration and confusion about what has been happening with Gunther recently, with some questioning this situation.
Gunther’s loss of prominence in WWE has drawn opinions from many people in recent months. John Cena himself, who was one of the Ring General’s victims at last year’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, commented on this in an interview at the beginning of the month on Busted Open.
“I know there’s sentiment out there that like, ‘Man, they’re wasting GUNTHER!’ Maybe currently they are. But I don’t see the view from the penthouse. I’m not in those meetings where they’re just looking at the whiteboard, connecting the dots. Maybe they’re just cooling him off. Maybe they’re putting him away from TV. I don’t know. What I am gonna do is I’m not gonna challenge the opinion of, ‘Aye, I’m not gonna give this for this guy and you’re gonna forget him.’ This is the work that I need to do for today, and we’re gonna make him look the best we can, and I’m gonna give him as much steam as I can, and what you do with it afterwards, that ain’t my call.”
Despite the rough patch he is going through in WWE and the lack of solid creative plans, Gunther has been circling the Undisputed WWE Championship lately. In May, for example, he faced Cody Rhodes for the title at WWE Clash in Italy.
