Kairi Sane remains one of the top free agents in pro wrestling, and a move to AEW appears to be a real possibility.
AEW and Sane have held talks about a possible deal, according to Fightful Select, but no agreement has been reached so far. Sane officially became a free agent in July after the 90-day non-compete clause tied to her April 24 release from WWE expired.
During a recent interview with TV Insider, Thekla was asked about the prospect of Sane joining AEW.
“I always like new faces coming in,” Thekla said. “I still consider myself a new face somehow. It has only been a little bit over a year for me.”
She added that she likes the idea of wrestlers moving between promotions, pointing to how the old territory system worked.
“I’m a huge fan of people just going from one territory to the other,” she said, “like in the old days. I’m very excited to see who’s gonna step up, you know?”
As for Sane specifically, Thekla, a former AEW Women’s World Champion, made it clear she is not treating the rumors as confirmation.
“Kairi has been the talk of the town,” she said. “I’m only going to believe it once I see it. For the fans, it’s always cool to see a new matchup. We’ll see. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Let us see if we can spice it up a little bit.”
Thekla is set to face Willow Nightingale at All Out on Saturday, September 26, and the winner will earn a shot at AEW Women’s World Champion Mercedes Moné at WrestleDream.
