WWE is reportedly considering bringing back the Sin Cara character, which hasn’t appeared on WWE programming since Cinta de Oro’s departure in 2019.
According to PWInsider, the creative team has pitched some early ideas for reviving the character.
According to the report, WWE is looking to put someone new under the mask if it moves forward with the revival. Discussions are still in the early stages, and no one has been chosen for the role.
Two wrestlers have played Sin Cara in WWE. The first was Místico, who debuted in 2011. Hunico also took on the persona that year as Sin Cara Negro, in a storyline that pitted the two against each other.
The feud reached Hell in a Cell 2011, where the original Sin Cara, in blue and gold, defeated Sin Cara Negro, in black and silver.
In December 2013, Hunico put the Sin Cara mask back on, this time in the original blue and gold.
The possible revival also ties into recent comments from de Oro. As reported in September, he said he would be open to returning to WWE to play Sin Cara again.
In a 2021 interview on Wrestling Inc. Daily, de Oro said Paul Heyman told him “Sin Cara is dead” during conversations about his future with the company.
He also said he pitched ideas for developing the character but was not able to put them into practice before he requested his release.
WWE still holds the trademark on the Sin Cara name. The public record for trademark registration No. 4440573 shows the company renewed it on April 8, 2024, for services related to wrestling performances.
