The John Cena Classic could become one of WWE’s biggest launching pads in the coming months.

According to information obtained by Sportskeeda, WWE intends to give the tournament winner a huge push, with the idea being to turn them into a major featured name on programming. A source who spoke to the outlet said the winner will receive a “boost” unlike almost anything seen in WWE in a long time.

The tournament was announced by John Cena at Backlash in Tampa, Florida, and will have a different format than usual. The concept involves wrestlers from the main roster and NXT, with the champion being decided by fan voting rather than necessarily by match results alone.

WWE will also introduce a new title tied to the John Cena Classic. So far, though, the company has not confirmed a date or location for the first edition of the special.

According to the report, the internal expectation is that the winner will be someone young, but already established to some degree within the company, in order to give the tournament concept immediate credibility.

Cena, for his part, has already admitted that the format still needs adjustments, especially due to criticism that wins and losses could lose weight with the decision being made through a fan vote.

Cena retired from in-ring competition on December 13, 2025, at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., but remains connected to WWE through special appearances and backstage projects.
