Add as a preferred source on Google Kevin Knight’s shot at the AEW World Championship at Redemption isn’t being treated backstage as a standalone reward. People connected to the company believe the current TNT Champion will be in the main event picture for other major shows going forward.
During the Self Made Session, Self Made Pro said he had heard something about this directly from an AEW source:
“One of the people that I spoke to told me outright, ‘You got to get him ready because this is the first main event of many.'”
The decision drew attention because AEW moved Kenny Omega vs. MJF up to Dynamite: Beach Break on July 8, rather than saving the rematch for Redemption. According to the report, the company believes it has built a fan base loyal enough to use its shows to elevate names that haven’t yet established themselves as top draws.
“AEW is confident. They are confident that their audience is going to buy the show because statistical evidence proves there’s a certain amount of people every month that will buy every show because it’s a safe bet to be a very good pay-per-view. So when you know you’re not going to bleed money because the audience trusts you to put on a great show, you can then afford to put an unproven pay-per-view draw at the main event.”
Recent business results help explain that confidence. Double or Nothing 2026 topped Revolution to become AEW’s biggest pay-per-view since the promotion started broadcasting on HBO Max.
Knight is also heading into the biggest match of his career with a strong track record as champion. He won the TNT Championship on April 12 in a 10-man Casino Gauntlet Match, and he has already reached the 100-day mark of his reign following his ninth title defense, a recent match against AR Fox.
Before he faces Omega on Sunday, July 26, in Montreal, Knight will first defend the title against Darby Allin on the July 22 episode of Dynamite.
