Cody Rhodes could be just days away from regaining the Undisputed WWE Championship in what may be a major shift in plans for SummerSlam.
Sami Zayn won the title at Night of Champions on June 27, defeating Rhodes and Gunther in a Triple Threat Match. The victory marked Zayn’s first world title in WWE, but his reign may already be in jeopardy.
During the taping for the next Friday Night SmackDown, which took place after this past Monday Night RAW, Rhodes defeated Jey Uso in a No. 1 Contender’s Match. As a result, he is set to face Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship on the July 6 episode of Monday Night RAW in Chicago.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE had been working for months on Cody Rhodes vs. CM Punk for the title as one of the top matches at SummerSlam.
“The plan for SummerSlam was always Cody Rhodes and CM Punk for the championship. Now, does that mean he’s winning the title on Monday or they changed plans? That I don’t know. Punk and Cody for the championship from the day he did that interview the day after WrestleMania, all through the disappearing act and everything like that, that was always the main event for one of the two nights of SummerSlam.”

According to sources, Cody Rhodes could regain the Undisputed WWE Title after nine days and then lose it to CM Punk at SummerSlam—again—less than a month later.

In other words, if WWE keeps that plan in place, Rhodes could defeat Zayn just nine days after losing the title in Saudi Arabia, then defend the championship against Punk less than a month later.
Punk has not appeared on WWE programming since the post-WrestleMania 42 episode of RAW, when he had a verbal confrontation with Rhodes. The “Best in the World” is expected to return in Chicago, his hometown, ahead of a possible move to SmackDown.
SummerSlam will take place on August 1 and 2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
