Drew McIntyre is becoming increasingly involved in Hollywood, and that is expected to further delay his return to WWE programming.
The Scottish wrestler was announced today as part of the cast of The Last Druid, a new action film starring Russell Crowe. Stacy Clausen, Pablo Derqui, and Tennyson Crowe were also confirmed for the production.
According to Deadline, the movie is already filming in Spain, with shoots taking place in Barcelona and the Canary Islands. The story follows a Roman emperor who discovers a druid stronghold in the mountains of Caledonia, forcing a Celtic elder, played by Crowe, to take up arms to protect his family and his people.
The news comes shortly after McIntyre wrapped his role in Amazon MGM Studios’ Highlander reboot, where he will play Angus MacLeod, the brother of Henry Cavill’s character. The film also features Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Russell Crowe, Djimon Hounsou, and Marisa Abela in its cast.
While recent rumors suggested that McIntyre could return to WWE during the build to SummerSlam, the current situation is very different.
According to PWInsider, those rumors were completely inaccurate. At the moment, there is nothing on the table creatively for McIntyre, and the expectation is that he will not be back in WWE anytime soon.
This year’s SummerSlam will take place on August 1 and 2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. WWE did have internal documents tying McIntyre to the event, but that does not mean there is a concrete plan for his return.
McIntyre has been away since WrestleMania 42, where he lost to Jacob Fatu in an Unsanctioned Match. Since then, WWE has not moved forward with any public direction for the Scottish Warrior.
