Gunther has once again named Sheamus as one of the most important figures from his run on WWE’s main roster.
During a recent appearance on Main Event Club, the current champion was asked which wrestlers he would like to retire in a potential Title vs. Career Match. Sheamus was one of the names picked by The Ring General.
Speaking about the Irishman, Gunther recalled that The Celtic Warrior was his first major rival after he arrived on the main roster, during his historic Intercontinental Championship reign.
“The thing is Brock is for publicity; he’s perfect. But Sheamus? It’s a personal matter that I want to retire him,” he said.
“On the main roster, Sheamus was my first really, really big opponent, and he made my life hell. He beat me up a lot. So he made me earn it. So I hope I can kick his a** on the way out,” he added.
The rivalry between the two hit its most memorable point at Clash at the Castle 2022, when Gunther defeated Sheamus to retain the Intercontinental Championship in Cardiff, Wales.
The two crossed paths again in 2024 during the King of the Ring tournament, in a rematch WWE presented as a direct continuation of their clash in the United Kingdom.
The comments also fit Gunther’s current presentation, as he has increasingly been positioned as a figure tied to the end of major careers. In December 2025, he defeated John Cena by submission in the final match of the 17-time world champion’s career.
