The announcement was made Saturday, May 23, during AAA on Fox, live from Mexico City.
AAA President Marisela Peña opened the show surrounded by legends and current talent, while her son, Dorian Roldán, was also in the ring hoping to be chosen for the role.
However, Peña revealed Mysterio as the new GM. Up to that point, Rey had been working English commentary for AAA shows, a role that was filled by Savio Vega for the rest of the broadcast.
The decision had an immediate impact on the show. Dominik Mysterio, the reigning AAA Mega Champion, appeared backstage visibly upset, while Dorian was also clearly unhappy with the decision.
Rey began exercising his authority later that same night. After Laredo Kid retained the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship against Rey Fenix with help from a low blow, Mysterio looked disappointed and indicated that a rematch between the two is coming at Noche de los Grandes.
