Add as a preferred source on Google The main clue fueling speculation over the past several days about a possible Sammy Guevara departure from AEW came from incorrect information on social media.
This past Sunday, July 19, Guevara posted just “New bio.” When fans checked out his profile, they noticed the description — “World Champion, Husband, Father & Professional Wrestler” — didn’t mention AEW, and began claiming he had removed the company’s name.
However, on a new episode of Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez said that AEW had never been in Guevara’s bio in the first place. In other words, nothing had actually been removed.
“I was told that this is 100%. So the reason this whole story happened was because somebody noticed that he had removed AEW from his bio.
So what happened was, he tweeted ‘New bio,’ and somebody went up there, looked at his bio, saw there was no AEW mentioned in it, and then they spread around the internet that he had ‘removed’ AEW from his bio.
I have been told that he never had AEW in his bio. AEW was never removed from his bio. Someone thought he had removed it from his bio, which is why this whole story came out that he wanted out or had gotten his release.
So really, nothing has changed at all over the last week. So that’s the update.”
The correction removes the main “proof” behind the departure narrative, but it doesn’t confirm on its own that Guevara has renewed his contract or that he’ll remain with the company long-term. As of now, AEW hasn’t announced his release and still has him on the official roster.
It’s also important to keep Guevara’s case separate from Tay Melo’s situation. Alvarez previously reported that Melo requested her release in 2025 and had the request denied. There is, however, no equivalent confirmation that Guevara has requested his own release.
The speculation found room to grow because the “Spanish God” has barely been used. Guevara has wrestled only three times in AEW in 2026, though one of those matches was for the AEW World Championship against Darby Allin on May 16. His most recent match came on June 26, when he and The Beast Mortos lost the ROH World Tag Team Championship to Místico and Máscara Dorada.
In the days before the rumor surfaced, Guevara said how often he appears on TV isn’t up to him, and that he’d only gotten a few hours’ notice before his match with Allin.
