WWE has added a title match to this week’s SmackDown, which is set for Friday, September 25, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Trick Williams will defend the United States Championship against Baron Corbin in a Steel Cage Match. SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis made the match official on X following recent attacks involving both men.
Here is what Aldis said in the announcement.
“Sometimes a conflict between two people reaches such a level that resolution is no longer an option, only escalation. I believe that the rivalry between Trick Williams and Baron Corbin over the United States Championship is such a conflict. So what do we do? It’s clear to me that these two men will not be contained by the confines of traditional competition. So I’ve decided that it’s time for escalation.
“And that escalation will take place live this Friday night on SmackDown on USA Network and around the world on Netflix from Indianapolis, Indiana, where Baron Corbin will challenge Trick Williams for the United States Championship inside a steel cage.”
The feud dates back to July, when Corbin made his WWE return and attacked Williams during a match against Carmelo Hayes. At SummerSlam on August 2, Corbin beat Williams for the United States Championship.
Williams regained the title at Sunday Night’s Main Event on September 6. He got the title shot after Lil Yachty survived five minutes in the ring with Corbin.
Williams also has a spot in the Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match, which he earned by defeating Randy Orton and Rey Fenix last week.
Friday’s SmackDown will also include two more Money in the Bank qualifying matches. In one, CM Punk, Gunther and Finn Bálor will battle for a spot in the men’s ladder match. In the other, Charlotte Flair, Giulia and Lash Legend will compete for a place in the Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match.
