WWE filed a trademark application for “SmackDown” on Friday, September 18, and the filing is specifically tied to championship belts.
The application, serial number 50116850, was submitted under International Class 006 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Its description reads:
“Trophies made primarily of common metal for use as awards, namely, championship trophy belts.”
The filing is still pending and has not yet been approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
How WWE intends to use the trademark is unclear. None of the company’s current titles officially carry the SmackDown name, though several championships are featured on the blue brand’s programming. WWE also sells a large line of replica titles through its official U.S. shop.

That wasn’t always the case. The SmackDown Women’s Championship, introduced in 2016, was renamed the Women’s World Championship in June 2023. The SmackDown Tag Team Championship similarly dropped its brand-specific name and is now known as the WWE Tag Team Championship.
This is not the first time WWE has made a move like this. In May 2022, the company filed a “SmackDown” trademark covering the same championship trophy belts description. That earlier application, serial number 97435788, has received multiple extensions of time to file a statement of use, with the fifth extension already granted.
The new filing does not confirm the creation of a SmackDown-branded championship or any changes to existing titles. WWE has not officially announced a new belt tied to the SmackDown name.
