WWE has acquired a pending federal trademark application for “Titan Sports,” the company’s former corporate name, from independent promotion Freedom Pro Wrestling, LLC, according to USPTO records reviewed by Wrestling Noticias.
The transfer took effect two days before WWE’s deadline to formally oppose the application.
Freedom, a Wisconsin-based promotion, filed the application on January 17, 2025, seeking to protect the name for live wrestling performances, wrestling contests, and the production of wrestling and sports entertainment events. The filing was made on an intent-to-use basis, meaning Freedom had not yet shown the USPTO that it was using the name commercially for those services.
An assignment recorded with the USPTO shows Freedom transferred the application, serial number 99008247, to World Wrestling Entertainment, LLC effective February 6, 2026. The document refers to “good and valuable consideration” but does not state an amount or specify whether money changed hands.
It does not indicate that WWE acquired Freedom Pro Wrestling itself. The assignment document covers the pending application, the mark in connection with the listed services, and the related goodwill and enforcement rights.
The timing stands out. After the application was published for opposition in August 2025, WWE filed two requests for additional time to potentially oppose it, and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ultimately gave the company until February 8 to act. Freedom executed the transfer on February 6, two days before that window closed.
USPTO records also show that WWE attorney Lauren A. Dienes-Middlen was appointed to the application that same day.
No formal opposition appears in the TTAB docket, and the board closed the extension proceeding on February 19. The public records do not say whether the transfer was tied to WWE’s extension requests or reveal anything about negotiations between the two sides.
The mark is not federally registered yet. The USPTO issued a Notice of Allowance on March 31, but WWE must still file a Statement of Use showing the name is being used in commerce or request more time. As of September 3, the application remains live and pending, and WWE has until September 30 for its next filing.
Titan Sports Inc. was the promotion’s corporate name through the 1980s and 1990s. The company had renamed itself World Wrestling Federation Entertainment by the time of its 1999 public offering and became World Wrestling Entertainment in May 2002.
Titan Sports Inc. registered “TITANSPORTS” as a single word in 1984. That registration was canceled in 2005 after its federal maintenance requirements were not met. A separate “TITAN SPORTS” application filed by WWE in 2004 was expressly abandoned in 2007.
Freedom also filed a second application for the Titan Sports name on January 17, 2025, this one covering wrestling-related clothing. As of September 3, the USPTO still lists Freedom as the owner of that application. The assignment to WWE identifies only the entertainment-services filing.
WWE also requested additional time to potentially oppose the apparel application, as did NFL Properties LLC and Tennessee Football, LLC. None of the three filed a formal opposition, according to the TTAB docket.
The USPTO issued a Notice of Allowance for the clothing application in January 2026, and Freedom has since received a six-month extension to show use of the name on apparel.
The public records do not explain why WWE acquired one application but not the other, and they say nothing about how, or whether, WWE plans to use the Titan Sports name.
To keep its application alive, WWE must either show the name in commercial use or request another six-month extension by September 30.
