WWE Confirms Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton for Sunday Night’s Main Event

WWE has confirmed the next chapter in the Cody Rhodes-Randy Orton rivalry. The two will square off at Sunday Night’s Main Event on September 6 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The match was made official on last night’s Friday Night SmackDown. Rhodes confronted General Manager Nick Aldis backstage and demanded a match with Orton. Aldis granted the request and booked the bout for the upcoming special.

This will mark the first time Rhodes and Orton have met in the ring since WrestleMania 42, where Rhodes defeated Orton to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship. After the match, Orton turned on his former partner and laid him out with a Punt Kick.

Orton was off television for several months before resurfacing at SummerSlam on August 1, where he interfered in the Undisputed WWE Championship match between Cody Rhodes and CM Punk. Orton’s RKO paved the way for Punk to win and retain the title.

The rivalry escalated further last night. Before Rhodes could face Sami Zayn in the SmackDown main event, Orton ambushed him. The two brawled through ringside, and it took multiple officials to finally pull them apart.

Sunday Night’s Main Event will emanate from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Cody Rhodes’ hometown, with a start time of 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The show marks the first time the long-running special has been held on a Sunday, falling on Labor Day weekend. In the United States, the event will stream on Peacock.
