Reuniting Big Cass and Enzo Amore was never part of WWE’s plans, even as the company held talks that could have brought both men back. The original idea was to invest in Cass alone and in what he could do as a singles act.
WrestleVotes reported on Fightful Select in May that WWE was interested in bringing the former tag team back. Enzo also reportedly visited the Performance Center around that time, while Cass was still wrapping up his AEW run as Big Bill.
Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio, however, that WWE would have kept the two apart even if Enzo’s return had gone through. According to Meltzer, Enzo was discussed for NXT, while the company felt that putting Cass back in a tag team could limit his potential as a singles star.
“There was talk of Enzo in NXT,” Meltzer said. “It was talked to me like it was pretty much a done deal, but they were gonna keep Enzo and Cass apart because of the idea that if they put them together, Cass’s upside is very limited in that tag team based on how WWE does tag teams.”
Cass returned to WWE on August 3 with an attack on Je’Von Evans and then defeated Evans on the August 24 episode of Raw in his first WWE match in eight years. After that, however, Cass dropped matches during WWE’s South American tour and lost to Dragon Lee on the September 28 episode of Raw.
Meltzer believes those losses may have changed how WWE views a reunion with Enzo.
“But now, with Cass in the spot that he’s in, being with Enzo may not be the worst thing in a tag team,” Meltzer said. “So I suppose they could do that.”
Cass was back in the spotlight on Monday’s Raw, interfering in the tag team match that pitted Dragon Lee and Rey Mysterio against Dominik Mysterio and JD McDonagh. After attacking both babyfaces, Cass stood tall to close the segment.
