Kenny Omega’s first challenger has been set. The reigning AEW World Champion will defend the title against Kevin Knight at Redemption on July 26 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The match was confirmed during Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite in Boston, Massachusetts. Omega was in the ring celebrating his title win, with the Young Bucks joining him before Will Ospreay came out.
Kevin Knight interrupted the segment and brought up MJF’s promise to give him a future title shot. The TNT Champion demanded that the promise be honored even though MJF no longer held the championship, then challenged Omega to a match at Redemption.
Omega accepted the challenge but questioned Knight’s alliance with the Don Callis Family. The champion said Knight did not need Callis to win the title and made it clear that he wanted to face the real “The Jet” without outside interference.
Knight responded by hitting Omega with the microphone. Will Ospreay tried to help the champion, while Darby Allin also got involved. The segment ended with several members of the Don Callis Family coming out and a large brawl breaking out on the ramp.
Knight won the AEW TNT Championship at Dynasty on April 12 by winning a Casino Gauntlet Match. Since then, he has defended the title against Mike Bailey, Myron Reed, Dezmond Xavier, and Lio Rush.
Even before the match with Omega was announced, Knight’s name had already been discussed internally.
Omega began his second reign as AEW World Champion last week when he defeated MJF at Dynamite: Beach Break.
