Chad Gable has been enjoying a strong run in WWE, drawing major praise in particular for the final stretch of his time as the “Original” El Grande Americano and his match at AAA Noche de los Grandes.
At the May 30 event from Arena Monterrey, Gable lost a Mask vs. Mask Match against El Grande Americano, closing out one of the most talked-about stories from the WWE and AAA partnership.
On a recent edition of The Phenomenally Retro Podcast, AJ Styles discussed the match and had high praise for the former Alpha Academy member.
“He’s a legit freaking pro wrestler that there’s no way somebody in the crowd’s going, I think I could take freaking Chad Cable. Dude, legit, he will drop you on your head and there’s nothing you can do about it. He will scoop you up and drop you. This guy is legit and everything about him, his look, his ability, everything about him is scary.”
“And then it’s just organically happening. It’s just things that are happening within the story of wrestling that just add to what they’re doing. Sometimes all you have to do is this, okay, just this is great. This is great for us. Unfortunate circumstances that happen are a little scary, but this is at the same time, sometimes […] No news is good news. Just don’t change it. Just let it breathe. Let it go organically.”
After losing the mask, Gable returned on the June 5 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, where he apologized to Rey Fenix for disrespecting lucha libre culture during his run as El Grande Americano.
