In the main event of TNA Slammiversary, held this Sunday, June 28, at Agganis Arena in Boston, Nic Nemeth, formerly known as Dolph Ziggler, defeated Mike Santana to win the TNA World Championship for the second time in his career.
The match featured heavy interference from Ryan Nemeth, who distracted Santana and opened the door for Nic to hit the then-champion with the Call Your Shot trophy. Even while badly busted open, Santana managed to stay alive in the match a little longer.
Late in the match, Santana hit the Spin the Block, but Nemeth kicked out. Not long after, the champion’s physical condition caught up with him, and Nemeth hit the Danger Zone before scoring the pinfall, ending Santana’s second reign as TNA World Champion.
Santana’s reign ends after 164 days. He had won the title on January 15, on the premiere episode of TNA iMPACT! on AMC, by defeating Frankie Kazarian.
The loss comes at a time of major uncertainty surrounding Santana’s future.
According to PWInsider’s Mike Johnson, Santana’s TNA contract expires in mid-July, and WWE has already shown interest in signing him.
