AEW put together a big card for Redemption in a short amount of time. According to new information, the promotion reportedly took steps to keep its top plans from leaking before the official announcements.
According to Fightful Select, several decisions related to the pay-per-view were kept under wraps until this past Wednesday, when four new matches were confirmed on AEW Dynamite.
“As has been the case, some of the plans for AEW Redemption were kept close to the vest until the day a lot of the matches were announced, @FightfulSelect has learned.”
Before the show in Boston, only the match between Thekla and Willow Nightingale for the AEW Women’s World Championship was officially confirmed for the event.
On Dynamite, AEW announced Kenny Omega vs. Kevin Knight for the AEW World Championship, Mark Davis vs. Andrade El Idolo for the AEW National Championship, and Kyle Fletcher vs. Bandido for the AEW International Championship, along with Chris Jericho vs. Tommaso Ciampa.
The following night, Adam Copeland and Christian Cage vs. PAC and Claudio Castagnoli for the AEW World Tag Team Championship was also added to the card. The champions will make their third defense since beating FTR at Double or Nothing.
The biggest change in plans involved the main event. MJF vs. Kenny Omega was originally expected to close out Redemption, but the match was moved up to the July 8 Dynamite: Beach Break special. MJF reportedly suggested the change, which was ultimately approved by Tony Khan.
With that, Omega will face Knight in the main event. Redemption will take place on July 26 at the Bell Centre.
