Jim Ross successfully underwent brain surgery on Wednesday, August 12, following weeks of concern over the legendary commentator’s health.
Conrad Thompson, Ross’s co-host on the Grilling JR podcast, confirmed the news. Thompson said he heard directly from the WWE Hall of Famer’s daughter that everything went as expected.
“Happy to report that our pal @JRsBBQ had a successful procedure this morning! I heard from his lovely daughter this morning that everything went well and good ole JR is expected to be back home by Friday! 🤠 Please keep JR in your prayers as we hope for a speedy recovery!”
Ross, 74, had a shunt placed to drain excess fluid that had built up in his brain. Doctors had determined the procedure was necessary, primarily due to the memory and balance issues the commentator had been experiencing in recent months.

2:53 PM · Aug 12, 2026JR’s health concerns deepened after he collapsed at home and was hospitalized for nearly 40 days. Ross has also been treated for both skin cancer and colon cancer in recent years.
Despite all those health issues, Ross still plans to return to AEW programming. His last appearance came at Double or Nothing in May, where he called the Jon Moxley vs. Kyle O’Reilly match.
Before the surgery, Ross himself revealed he was targeting a trip to London for AEW All In, scheduled for August 30 at Wembley Stadium. His AEW contract is also set to expire later this month, with no renewal confirmed.
