The New Day’s potential move to AEW appears to have moved past simple speculation. Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods are reportedly already being included in creative conversations behind the scenes at Tony Khan’s promotion.
According to Ibou of the Self Made Sessions podcast, there’s an expectation that the duo will sign with AEW as soon as they’re free to appear. Several ideas have reportedly already been pitched for how the former WWE stars will be introduced into the company’s programming.
Kingston and Woods left WWE in early May after declining a contract restructuring proposed by TKO. Their deals hadn’t yet expired, but the company granted their release, along with a 90-day non-compete clause.
AEW’s interest isn’t new. In May, Fightful Select reported that practically every source they spoke to within the company favored signing the duo, including some big names. MJF and FTR also teased the group not long after their WWE exit.
Bobby Lashley has even said he’d like to work with Kingston and Woods in AEW, going as far as bringing up the possibility of both joining the Hurt Syndicate.
Even though the New Day name is still being used to identify the duo, Big E isn’t part of this potential deal. The former WWE Champion remains under contract with WWE as an ambassador and host of the pre-show and post-show panels for premium live events.
If the clock on that clause started on May 2, Kingston and Woods will be free agents by the end of July. With All In set for August 30 at Wembley Stadium, that leaves an important window for a possible debut ahead of AEW’s biggest annual event.
Still, the creative talks don’t amount to confirmation that a contract has already been signed.
