WWE has confirmed a major NXT Championship match for Heatwave. Tony D’Angelo will defend the title against both Cruz Montana and Grayson Waller in a Triple Threat Match.
Robert Stone made the announcement during Tuesday’s NXT at the Performance Center in Orlando. Waller declared himself the rightful number one contender, only to be interrupted first by D’Angelo and then by Montana. Stone settled the dispute by booking all three into the title match.
The original plan called for D’Angelo to defend against the winner of Montana vs. Waller. The two met in last week’s main event, but Zilla Fatu interfered, attacked both men, and the match was ruled a No Contest. Fatu also stared down D’Angelo before leaving the ring.
Despite the interference, Zilla Fatu was not added to the Heatwave match. During this week’s segment, Stone said he would personally deal with Fatu the next time he shows up at the Performance Center.
Tony D’Angelo is in his first reign as NXT Champion. He captured the title on April 4 at Stand & Deliver, defeating Joe Hendry, Ethan Page, and Ricky Saints in a Fatal 4-Way Match.
NXT Heatwave takes place on August 30 at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas.
