Dave Meltzer believes WWE should have at least considered a late change to the finish of Roman Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship match against Penta on this week’s Monday Night RAW. Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer said an audible could have been discussed to send Penta out of Mexico City as champion.
Reigns and Penta headlined the September 14 RAW at Arena CDMX, marking the show’s first trip to Mexico City in 15 years. Penta came close to winning after landing a Springboard Mexican Destroyer, but Reigns fought his way back. In the closing moments, the champion caught Penta with a Superman Punch out of the air and put him away with a Spear for the pin.
Meltzer had already made the case for a Penta win on Wrestling Observer Radio right after the show went off the air. He returned to the subject in the new edition of the Newsletter. In his view, the crowd’s reaction alone was reason enough for WWE to have at least discussed changing the finish.

Penta earned his title shot by winning the World Heavyweight Championship No. 1 Contender’s Tournament, beating Laredo Kid and La Parka before topping his brother, Rey Fénix, in the August 31 final.
The match also marked Reigns’ first title defense on a WWE weekly show since June 2022.
A rematch isn’t in the plans for now. According to WrestleVotes Radio, on Fightful Select, WWE believes it could revisit the matchup down the line. Several people backstage, though, feel Penta deserves to stay at the top of the card after the Mexico City match.
