Add as a preferred source on Google Roman Reigns says he left the chair alone at SummerSlam because he isn’t interested in repeating Seth Rollins’ mistake from 2014.
Reigns retained the World Heavyweight Championship over Rollins in the main event of SummerSlam Night 2 on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, capping off one of the longest-running stories of his career. Late in the match, with the referee down, Rollins went to the timekeeper’s area and grabbed a chair, setting up a callback to the night he turned on Reigns and broke up The Shield. Reigns beat him to it and dropped him before he could swing.
That left Reigns standing over his old teammate with the chair in his hands and a clear shot to pay him back 12 years later. He threw it out of the ring instead and beat Rollins without it.
Asked about the moment on the SummerSlam Post-Show, Reigns said the call came down to the same thing he preaches at home.
“Do what I tell my sons, what I tell my daughter, learn from your mistakes. It’s time that we all grow up emotionally, you’ve gotta mature and learn from your mistakes and make them lessons, and that’s what I did tonight.”
The match also worked in nods to the third member of The Shield, with Reigns and Rollins each using moves associated with Dean Ambrose, who has been with AEW as Jon Moxley since 2019.
