Roman Reigns says the message he had for Seth Rollins after their SummerSlam main event was a simple one, and it went all the way back to their developmental days.
Reigns closed out Night 2 of SummerSlam on Sunday in Minneapolis, retaining the World Heavyweight Title over Rollins in a match that went just over 33 minutes. The OTC put him away with three straight Spears, then offered his fist to his former Shield partner after the bell, with the two striking the group’s pose in the middle of the ring.
Reigns was asked during the post-show what he said to Rollins in that moment.
“‘It’s always been me and you.’ Since FCW. Since The Red Rooster was b*tching at us. It’s always been me and Seth. It’s always been the two of us.
Even in The Shield, we knew what it was. We knew Ambrose was a wild hair, but we knew we were the guys that were going to change this place. We’re the pioneers of this place. When people left, when people were scared and they ran off, we held the fort down.”
The Red Rooster is Terry Taylor, who was a trainer in WWE‘s former developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling. In 2011, Taylor paired Reigns and Rollins off in an intensity drill that has since become a key part of The Shield’s origin story.
Rollins has said the drill created a new level of respect between the two of them and proved to him that Reigns had the same mindset he and Jon Moxley did. Without that, according to Rollins, The Shield never comes together the way it did.
