Add as a preferred source on Google Roman Reigns may have taken a shot at Jon Moxley, CM Punk, or Cody Rhodes after beating Seth Rollins in the main event of WWE SummerSlam Night 2 on August 2.
On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the World Heavyweight Champion’s line about him and Rollins staying in WWE while others left.
“Roman did a line, and it was essentially, ‘Me and you stayed, and other people left because it was too hard,’ or whatever. Some people thought he meant Moxley, and some people thought he meant Punk and Cody. I don’t know which ones he meant.”
Moxley is the easiest fit. Now in AEW, he was the third member of The Shield and his WWE run ended in April 2019.
On the SummerSlam post-show, Reigns explained what he told Rollins before the final spear.
“‘It’s always been me and you.’ Since FCW. Since The Red Rooster was b*tching at us. It’s always been me and Seth. It’s always been the two of us.
“Even in The Shield, we knew what it was. We knew Ambrose was a wild hair, but we knew we were the guys that were going to change this place. We’re the pioneers of this place. When people left, when people were scared and they ran off, we held the fort down.”
Punk and Rhodes fit, too. Both left WWE, rebuilt themselves elsewhere, and came back in top spots.
The Punk theory picked up steam because of what he said after Night 1.
“I don’t have it in my contract that I have to be in the main event.”
Meltzer, though, believes Punk was more likely talking about Brock Lesnar, whose match with Oba Femi closed Night 1.
“People took that as a shot at Roman. But here’s the thing: Roman was not in the main event or even on the card last night. Brock’s rule was always first match or last match. So I think that’s what Punk was referring to.”
Meltzer doesn’t know who Reigns had in mind, but he believes the line was deliberate.
“A lot of people thought Punk was referring to Roman and that Roman was referring to Punk. I don’t know that he was, but it was a line that was referring to something.”
“Me and you stayed, and all these other people didn’t stay. They went.”
Within the show itself, the nods to Moxley’s offense during the match and The Shield gesture afterward are the strongest evidence pointing his way.
